Here’s a fantasy coach card of the “Say Hey Kid” Willie Mays just after he closed out his legendary Major League playing career:
After Mays hung up his God-like cleats in 1973, he stayed on with the
Mets as a hitting instructor for a few years until 1979, the very same
year he would be elected to the Hall of Fame among the other all-time
greats.
Would have been really cool to open Topps packs as a kid in the 1970’s,
finding cards of guys you always heard about but never got to see play
or on a card during their playing careers!
Lot’s of fun creating these, and look for a bunch more in the near future.
In the early 1980's when I was a teenager opening packs of Donruss, I was largely "meh" about pulling cards of coaches, but now that most teams' coaches are guys I saw play, I freakin' love the idea of coaches cards.
ReplyDelete...And I love the idea of going back and making coaches cards for legends like Willie Mays. Nice job!
Well done!
ReplyDeleteLooks great, although the signature should be black instead of blue.
ReplyDeleteThe Big Red Machine of the 70s had "Big Klu" on their staff. I always wondered if the '72-74 A's had any legends on their coaching staff?
