REVISITING MY "MISSING" 1974 CARD FOR GARY ROSS

On the blog today, we revisit my 10-year-old post of a "missing" 1974 card for former pitcher Gary Ross of the San Diego Padres:

For the 1973 season Ross appeared in 59 games for the Padres, finishing 29 of them with a total of 76.1 innings pitched.

He fashioned a 4-4 record with a 5.42 earned run average and 44 strikeouts.

I always remember him towards the end of his career when with the California Angels, for whom he pitched between 1975 and 1977.

Overall he played for the Chicago Cubs, Padres and Angels between 1968 and 1977, finishing with a 25-47 career record, with a 3.92 ERA and 378 K's over 283 games and 713.2 innings pitched.

For what it's worth, over the years I also created a 1975 and 1976 set of "missing" cards to help us "complete" our collections!

 

NOT REALLY MISSING IN ACTION- 1975 GARY ROSS

Up on the blog today we have a “not so missing” 1975 card for former pitcher Gary Ross, who barely saw any action during the 1974 season with the San Diego Padres:

Ross appeared in nine games for the Padres that season, not factoring in a decision while pitching to an earned run average of 4.50 in 18 innings of work.
For the 1975 campaign Ross would appear in one single game, now with the California Angels, throwing five innings and allowing three runs for a 5.40 ERA, taking the loss.
He would bounce back nicely somewhat in 1976 when he appeared in 34 games, 31 of them starts, going 8-16 but with a very nice 3.00 earned run average with seven complete games and two shutouts in 225 innings of work.
Sadly, his 1977 season was another bust as he went 2-4 in only 14 games with a 5.55 ERA over 58.1 innings, which would end up being his last as a Big League pitcher.
He’d retire after the season, never even playing Minor League ball after that, finishing up with a career 25-47 record over 283 appearances, with a 3.92 ERA in 713.2 innings pitched between 1968 and 1977.

For the 1975 campaign Ross appeared in one single game with the California Angels, throwing five innings and allowing three runs for a 5.40 ERA, taking the loss. This was after he appeared in only nine games for the San Diego Padres the year before, throwing 18 innings and not factoring in a decision.

I think a pitcher who appeared in a third of his teams' games the year before deserves a card, don't you?

So I went ahead and designed a 1974 Topps card for San Diego Padre Gary Ross.
