REVISITING A "MISSING" CARD POST FROM 2014: 1973 JOHN CUMBERLAND

Here's a "missing" 1973 card for pitcher John Cumberland of the St. Louis Cardinals:

After a very nice 1971 season with the San Francisco Giants which saw him post a 9-6 record with a 2.92 E.R.A. and two shutouts in 45 games and 185 innings, Cumberland started the 1972 season 0-4 with a bloated 8.64 E.R.A., finding himself traded to the Cardinals for a minor league player on June 16th.

The change of scenery didn't exactly help, as he went on to a 1-1 record with a 6.65 earned run average over 14 games.

All told he went 1-5 with a 7.71 E.R.A. over 23 games and 46.2 innings of work.

He actually didn't appear in a Major League game in 1973, but came back for 17 appearances in 1974 with the California Angels, fairing a bit better with an 0-1 record and 3.74 E.R.A. over 21.2 innings, his last on the big league level.

For his career, Cumberland went 15-16 with a 3.82 earned run average over 110 appearances, 36 of which were starts.

NOT REALLY MISSING IN ACTION- 1975 JOHN CUMBERLAND

Today on the blog we have a career-capping 1975 “not so missing” card for former Big League pitcher John Cumberland, who made it back to a Major League mound in 1974 after spending all of 1973 in the Minors:

Cumberland, who last pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1972, was now a California Angel, and appeared in 17 games during the 1974 campaign, in what ended up being the last action he’d see in his MLB career.
Over those 17 games, Cumberland went 0-1 with an ERA of 3.74, all out of the bullpen, throwing 21.2 innings, walking 10 and striking out 12.
Originally up in 1968 as a member of the New York Yankees, Cumberland also pitched for the San Francisco Giants in addition to St. Louis and California, finishing up with a record of 15-16, with an ERA of 3.82 over 110 appearances and 334.1 innings, with 36 starts, two shutouts and two saves.

 

 

NOT REALLY MISSING IN ACTION- 1970 JOHN CUMBERLAND

Today I post up a 1970 “not so missing” card for former New York Yankees pitcher John Cumberland, who appeared in a scant two games during the 1969 season:

Cumberland pitched four innings for the Yankees over those two appearances, allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks, not factoring in a decision.
The previous season he had his first taste of the Big Leagues, pitching in one game at the end of the year, throwing two innings and allowing two earned runs.
In 1970 he would be traded to the San Francisco Giants for veteran pitcher Mike McCormick, where he would have his best season as a Major Leaguer in 1971, going 9-5 with a nice .292 ERA over 45 appearances and 185 innings of work, including two shutouts.
However he would find himself struggling in 1972, going 1-5 with a bloated 7.71 ERA in 23 games, finding himself with the St. Louis Cardinals by season’s end, then spending all of 1973 in the Minor Leagues before making it back in 1974 with the California Angels where he appeared in the final 17 games of his 6-year career, going 0-1 with a 3.74 ERA over 21.2 innings pitched.
