Up
on the blog today is a card I thought I already created some time ago,
but better late than never, a 1971 “not so missing” card for former
one-year pitcher Mel Behney:
The 22-year-old played the entirety of his Big League career between
August 14th of 1970, through September 20th, appearing in five games and
going 0-2 with an earned run average of 4.50 over 10 innings of work.
He would go on to pitch another three years in the Minor Leagues, the
last season in the Boston system, but never get a chance at a Major
League game again.
Oddly, he would get a spot on a Topps multi-player rookie card in both
the 1972 and 1973 sets, even though he never appeared in an MLB game
again.
I did notice that in his final pro season, playing with the Pawtucket
Red Sox in 1973, he made 18 starts and completed 12 of them.
Just something quirky that struck me when I looked over his career.
