This
card is really a toss-up as far as “missing” or “not really missing”, a
1977 card for former Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Beard, who had his
rookie card in the 1976 Topps set:
Beard was borderline “missing”, as he appeared in 30 games for the Braves, going 0-2 with a save over 33.2 innings pitched.
His innings pitched dropped by about half from the year before, though
his appearances were pretty much the same (34 to 30), along with a 4.28
earned run average.
But the 1977 season didn’t bring much luck, as he’d appear in only four
games with an eye-popping 9.64 ERA over 4.2 innings, with 14 hits and
two walks allowed. Ouch.
That would sadly be it for the lefty, and he’d wrap up his brief Major
League career with a 4-2 record along with a 3.74 ERA in 74 games and
118 innings.
But certainly nothing to be embarrassed about!
