Here’s
a “fantasy” 1972 coach card for beloved lifer Luke Appling, one of the
greatest Chicago White Sox players, who went on to have a lengthy career
as a coach:
“Old Aches and Pains” coached for the White Sox in 1970 and 1971 after a
coaching and managing stint for the Kansas City Athletics in the
late-60’s.
It made sense that he was back in the South Side of Chicago since he
played his entire 20-year career with the White Sox, collecting over
2700 hits, two batting titles and playing on seven all-star games
between 1930 and 1950.
I will always remember that home run he hit off of Warren Spahn at the age of 75 in 1982 at an old-timers game at RFK Stadium!
